6 Relaxation Techniques Best to Reduce Stress Effectively

Stress is a body reaction that appears automatically when pressure or a new unknown situation occurs. This problem happens because the body will release two hormones called cortisol and adrenaline as a result of the pressure.

With the release of these two hormones, we can easily become unfocused, and forgetful, and even experience physical symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, diarrhea, and palpitation. Experiencing this for a long period is not comfortable at all. When left untreated, stress can lead to various severe health issues, affecting both physical and emotional well-being.

But worry not, there are a couple of relaxation techniques that you can do to relieve stress effectively. By utilizing this technique, your body will be able to activate and release the right response to help overcome the negative symptoms you might experience.

What Are the Relaxation Techniques to Reduce Stress?

Relaxation is one of the methods that aims to improve the health of the body and mind. This technique is effective in lowering heart rate and promoting smoother blood circulation. There are many ways to do relaxation techniques, below are some of the things you can try!

1. Breathe Focus

This is one of the simplest techniques that you can use for relaxation. Though it is simple to do, it can produce powerful effects. To begin, you can sit or lie on your back – choose whichever you are most comfortable with and put your hand on your stomach. Slowly, take a deep breath and hold it for a while before exhaling slowly. As you exhale your breath, try to also release any negativity or disturbing thoughts that are crowding your mind.

2. Mindfulness Meditation

You can do mindfulness meditation in a sitting position and focus on your breath. During each of your breath, direct your current thoughts without dwelling on any memories or indulging in future fantasies. Just focus on your breath, on your body, and empty your mind. This might be hard to do at first, but slowly you can regain your control and perfect this mindfulness meditation.

3. Body Scan

This technique combines muscle relaxation and breath focus. You should focus on one part of your body while holding your breath. Slowly exhale your breath as you also release any tension that you experience in that part of your body.

4. Yoga

Who doesn’t know yoga? This is one of the most well-known relaxation techniques, but unfortunately due to its constant movement; many people forget about the importance of yoga which is to relax the mind, and only treat it as a way to exercise. 

Yoga itself is a relaxation technique that combines rhythmic breathing and flowing posture or movement. The physical aspects of this practice can be helpful to distract you from any disturbing thoughts. Yoga is also very effective in helping to improve body flexibility and balance.

5. Ayurvedic Treatment

Another relaxation technique you can try is the Ayurvedic treatment. This treatment focuses on how to restore balance in the body through a variety of approaches. From the usage of herbal remedies, yoga, mindfulness meditation, and even dietary changes. This technique’s goal is to cleanse the body of things that have the potential to trigger disease. To do this, you should work with an Ayurveda practitioner so they can help you create a treatment plan that is tailored to your specific needs.

6. Muscle Relaxation

In this technique, you need to tighten and relax muscles slowly. You can also combine this with breathing exercises. To begin this relaxation technique, you should first find a comfortable place to sit or lie down. Then, close your eyes and take a deep breath. Expand the stomach when inhaling and tighten it when exhaling. After you have already focused on controlling your breath, start to tighten and relax your muscles slowly. As a beginner you can start to do muscle relaxation in the head or face, then move to the lower muscles of the body such as your toes.

Most of these relaxation techniques can be done easily at your own home or any space you are comfortable with. But do keep in mind that because this technique requires you to focus during the session, you have to create a comfortable space that can help you achieve the ultimate focus.

To create such a space, choose a quiet, clutter-free area with pleasant lighting, and cozy elements like cushions, and carpet, or play soothing music.
